  • Phil Mickelson Starts Fasting to Hopefully Improve Play

Our man Phil Mickelson has taken a drastic measure to help improve his play, which has been down lately.  He’s been fasting, according to an ESPN article published this morning.

Mickelson Loses 15 Pounds by Fasting

The fast was for six full days, and he lost a whopping 15 pounds during this fast.  He had been playing poorly since winning the AT & T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am earlier in 2019, and has missed cuts in four of his last six entries, which is highly uncharacteristic for the golf legend.

Here’s a photo screen shot of a video he uploaded to his Twitter channel where he talked about all of it.

    Phil Mickelson Fast
Phil has noticeably lost weight in his core.

“The last 10 days I’ve done what I call a hard reset to change and try and make things better,” said Mickelson in a video he posted on Twitter.

The 49 year old golfer dropped the extra weight by drinking exclusively water and a special coffee blend, and also doing a retreat.

Here’s to hoping the fast works, and the good old Lefty is back and better than ever in his next events. Phil, we’re rooting for you!

  • Phil Mickelson Denies Involvement in College Admissions Scandal

There has been a lot of news this week about the college admission scandal that has embroiled over 50 parents, including a few celebrities (such as Full House star Lori Loughlin and actress Felicity Huffman) who allegedly committed fraud to get their children enrolled in the college of their choice.

Allegations of the fraud include payment of bribes to cheat on proctored exams such as the SAT and ACT, as well as creating phony athlete profiles and bribing college coaches to get their kids enrolled as athletic recruits.

    Mickelson Used Rick Singer’s Services

The ringleader of this whole scam is a man by the name of Rick Singer, who ran a for-profit college admissions business and used it to funnel money from the parents to the test proctors and coaches to make the enrollment happen. When it seemed like we had heard all of the celebrity names tied to Singer earlier in the week, more names have been linked to him, including Phil Mickelson.

After completing his round at The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass on Thursday, Mickelson was met with the expected questioning regarding his relationship with Singer, and had this to say to the assemblage of reporters (as reported on golf.com):

“We, along with thousands of other families, hired he and his company to help us guide through the college application process. We’re probably more shocked than anyone and we’ve been dealing with it the last few days, but that’s about it.”

Following his meeting the media, he also posted this message on his Twitter account:

    Our Reaction

Is Phil Mickelson guilty of bribing college admissions?

Obviously, this is a fan site of the legend Phil Mickelson and we think this is all a bunch of bull. He has a wonderful family and talented, hard-working kids. By his own admission, he is a proud dad of how gifted and well-developed his children are. They have good grades, numerous extracurricular activities, and worldly views that have colleges fighting to get them as students.

We believe that Mickelson used Singer’s services like thousands of other parents, just (as he claimed) as a way to help them navigate the college admissions process. He has used Singer’s company for three years (he currently has a daughter who is a sophomore at Brown University) and got to know the tutors and administrative staff that got dozens of colleges on their radar and helped navigate through the confusing process.

We know a lot of people will look at this case with a bit of skepticism, as they are clouded by the stigma of his insider trading activity in the past. Let us remind you, he was cleared of any wrongdoing in that case and has strongly denied any illicit activity (just as he’s doing with this admissions scandal).

Until any definitive proof comes out that shows Mickelson was paying bribes for test-taking or admission, he is innocent until proven guilty in this. In all the other cases that made the news this week, there are wiretapped conversations and a paper trail of money being funneled. At this time, we’ve seen nothing along those lines with Phil, and believe he honestly used these services in the way he’s claimed.

  • Phil Mickelson Wins AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am

The weather made him wait until Monday to close out the Pebble Beach Pro Am, but Phil Mickelson handled his business and got his 44th tour win on Monday.

He entered the day with a three shot lead after a weather-delayed Sunday and beat out Scott Stallings and Paul Casey on the final two holes to grab his fifth win at this exact event, which put him in a tie with Mark O’Meara for the all time record for number of wins.

Shooting a 19 under 268 for the week of golf, Mickelson attempted to get his playing partner, Pau Casey, to finish the round on Sunday as the sky turned black and visibility was very poor.  Casey argued that there wasn’t enough time to finish and the two argued back and forth prior to play being stopped with only two holes left.  At this point, Stallings was already finished with his round and had finished with a 15 under par score, which had him tied with Casey at the time.

Entering Sunday’s final round, Mickelson was behind by three strokes to Casey.  He shot a 7 under par 65 to take the championship from Casey, who himself was gunning for his third career title.

It’s good to see Lefty racking up the wins and continuing his trek into the record books.  Last time I updated the blog, Phil beat Tiger in “The Match.”

Six months from now, Phil will return to this same course and shoot for his final leg of the prestigious “Career Grand Slam” when he seeks a U.S. Open Victory.

You can bet your ass we’ll be cheering for him to win that one!

As Phil is in the twilight of his career, it’s amazing to see him playing this great of golf.  He’s won once and been runner up three times already in this early part of the season.  50 career wins is in sight, and Lefty is locked and loaded, shooting for yet another trophy for his impressive trophy case.

Until the next round – Go Lefty!

  • Phil Mickelson Vs. Tiger Woods

Two of the best to ever swing a golf club are about to go head to head this Thanksgiving week in an event aptly titled “the Match.”  Phil Mickelson vs. Tiger Woods will be televised and many side bets will be made.  Today I’ll explain what this is all about and fill you in on whats about to go down.

“The Match” Puts Phil Mickelson Versus Tiger Woods

Where else, but Las Vegas, would this event take place?  Both of these touring professionals are notorious gamblers who have huge bank accounts and even larger ego’s.  This game will include all the side bets one could ask for – and much more.  During televised PGA tour matches, there have been rumors of side bets taking place, but you’ll never see that stuff on TV.  However, that’s all about to change.

Featuring real-time oddsmaking, you’ll be able to see probabilities prior to shots that takes into consideration course-mapping information along with the players’ ShotLink data.  It’ll be comparable to watching the Poker Tour where you can see the cards each player is holding.  Let’s be honest folks, this is about Tiger vs. Phil, and money.  That’s it.  And we all know that both of them have a ton of cash in the bank already.  If you want to know exactly how much, just follow the links below.

Everyone who likes to golf knows that more often than not, gambling happens.  In Europe, bookies are abundant and waiting to take your action while you sit in a pub and watch the tournament.  Soon, the USA will have legalized gambling, and some States do already, but nationally, we don’t at the time of this post.

It’s worth noting that the PGA Tour supported (and continues to support) legalized wagering.  They have a lot of angles to make money off of the gambling, which I’ll talk about in a future article as that unfolds.

Jeff Sherman of the Westgate Sportsbook and Casino recently tweeted the odds:

    To Win Outright:

    Tiger Woods -200
    Phil Mickelson +170

Who would you take in Tiger Vs. Phil?

I’ll be back later to recap the event and let you know the FULL results.

  • Phil Mickelson Diet

Phil Mickelson has managed to make a name for him over the years by winning over 40 golf tournaments. With wins in the Open tournament and the PGA championship, the three Master title holders have managed to be successful for many years. Now the fifth best golf player has decided to allegedly become a vegetarian for the sake of his arthritis and overall health. He has switched to a healthier alternate known as the Paleo diet. The diet essentially limits down your gluten, sugar and processed food intake in order to lose weight fast but in a healthier way. He decided to get serious about his diet after the loss in 2013, in which he then decided to fully focus on his health.

I first read about his diet and exercise plan on this entry:  https://www.dietpillreviews.com/celebrity-diet-plans-to-lose-weight-fast/

What is Phil Mickelson’s Diet Program Like?

There are many problems that the human body can face such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. These happen to accompany old age and can be highly detrimental. The diet is also known as the “Caveman” diet as it takes people back to their roots, to what our ancestors use to eat. Here are some things that Mickelson’s coach Cochran has suggested that anyone wanting to go on the Paleo diet needs to do. One thing that is important is the amount of exercise needed. The diet only requires you to eat foods that age old hunter gatherers used to eat. As you can tell, it’s pretty strict and extremely limited.

Mickelson has been using this as a means to lose weight effectively in order to gain ball speed and play more efficiently, with precision. It has managed to improve his health by eliminating high fat and processed foods which contain less to zero nutritional value. It emphasizes on the intake of fruits and vegetables, which have left Mickelson looking fresh and younger. The diet essentially contains healthy vitamins, which in term really helped out with Mickelson’s arthritis, minerals and fiber which help to fill up a person faster and cut down the calories. While the diet is important, so is the workout. Mickelson has managed to burn more calories than he takes in, which explains how he is in such good shape.

The diet contains of many food groups, mainly lean cuts of beef, pork, and poultry, preferably grass-fed, organic, or free-range selections which have proven to be healthier. Other meats include game animals, such as quail, venison, and bison. Dairy is not restricted unlike in other diets. The diet allows eggs, but no more than six a week. Free range does serve to be a better option overall, since it eliminates the mass production factor. For high protein, fish, including shellfish are a great source. Fruit, such as strawberries, cantaloupe, mango, and figs are most encouraged as they leave the system with vitamins. When it comes to vegetables, they have to be non-starchy, which include produce such as asparagus, onions, peppers, and pumpkin. Many do include nuts and seeds into the paleo diet such as almonds, cashews, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds, but most like to lay off them as they help to gain weight. Olive oil, flaxseed oil, and walnut oil are best alternates to sunflower or canola oil, as they are much healthier.

The diet essentially includes everything you need from a good, balanced diet. It works great for Phil, it should work great for you too!

  • Phil Mickelson Masters Outfit

If you haven’t heard by now, the great Phil “Lefty” Mickelson wore an outfit that drew plenty of ire at the Masters during the practice round last week.

It was an outfit that some said “was good for a business lunch.”  Others just said “what the heck is he wearing?”

What Did Phil Mickelson Wear During the Master’s Practice Round?

Well, see for yourself with this picture below.

  • Jordan Spieth Felt Phil Mickelson Snubbed Him for an Autograph

One of the up and coming golfers of the current era, Jordan Spieth, recently shared a story with Golf Digest that I had to come here and share with you.

You can read the full story right here.  Below, I’ve put the story in my own words.

    The Jordan Spieth Autograph Debacle

Many athletes differ on signing autographs for their fans.  You’ll find some, like Arnold Palmer, will go out of the their way to make people happy.  Others, well, not so much.

In a world where one reaction can have an impact on what people think of you, so many people can get rubbed the wrong way if they catch someone on the wrong day.  Phil is notably one of the better guys on tour, and he’ll make sure he signs autographs for people whenever possible.

    Jordan Spieth

That said, everyone has their good days, and their bad days.  Sometimes things just don’t work out for people, and time isn’t on their side.  Of course, this has happened to Phil like it’s happened to any other athlete or celebrity out there, and one of the times it happened to none other than legendary golfer Jordan Spieth, a three time major champion himself.

When he was in Austin recently before a WGC match, the phenom golfer was asked if he was ever slighted for a signature growing up.  His answer was classic.

    I’m quoting him below:

There was a time that I was out, I think at the Byron Nelson with my dad and Phil Mickelson and Davis Love III were on the putting green. And i was yelling at them, as I now get annoyed while I’m practicing when I’m getting yelled at, and they were talking and they said, ‘One second.’

“And when they finished, Phil was pulled off in a different direction and Davis came and signed for me. And I thought for the longest time that Phil just blew me off. And Davis was the nicest guy. And Phil, I didn’t care for as much for a little while because of that.”

Rightfully so, Spieth was upset with Lefty, and he didn’t forget it.  When he reflected on that moment, he mentioned that in the back of his mind, as an adult, he knows Phil was probably meeting with a sponsor or attending a mandatory media obligation.

The story came up recently, and when Spieth mentioned it to Phil himself, he said:

“I knew who you were, and I didn’t want to go over there and sign it,” Spieth relayed.

It’ll be an interesting situation if the two of them are paired up again soon!  They play at Augusta National in under two weeks.

  • Phil Mickelson Makes 100th Career Major Appearance

The famous golfer from San Diego, our reason for this fan website, is making his 100th appearance in a major PGA Championship this weekend.  Along with him making his 100th appearance is South African Ernie Els.  The two of them have been friends throughout their entire career competing against one another.

This is an elite club of golfers who have actually participated in 100 majors.

When Els took home his first major victory back in 1994, Curtis Strange, a two time U.S. Open championship winner, said that Els was the “next God.

However, the media missed on this quote, and what he was trying to say was that Els would be “the next guy.”  He has a very thick accent, apparently!

When Mickelson won the Masters at age 34, it was his first major tournament win.  Ironically, this came to be a win over Els.  On the final hole of competition, Mickelson made an 18 foot birdie putt for the win.  When Els heard the roar of the crowd on the putting green, he retrieved his belongings and left.

The two legends even received a cake for this triumph.

Jack Nicklaus leads the way with 164 career starts in a major.  After that, it’s Gary Player, Raymond Floyd, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw, Sam Snead, Tom Kite, Gene Sarazen, Nick Faldo, Mark O’Meara, and Bernhard Langer.  This elite list is only 14 golfers deep, so you can tell what kind of company Lefty just joined.

Every golfer on that list is in the Hall of Fame, and rightfully so.

Good luck to Phil, we’ll be cheering for you this weekend!

  • Golfer Geeks Offers Solid Advice on Golf Products

Today we welcome a special editorial from a website that covers the golf industry like few others.  Enjoy!

An Important Note: So Phil and Bones just split up after 25 years of wedded bliss. WTF!? Who the hell saw this coming? Apparently, Tim Rosaforte.

Anyway, let me get to what I originally wanted to talk about. GolferGeeks.com; that’s my website dedicated to my nearly lifelong love affair with golf. I cover everything from swing theory- read books, videos, etc- to golfing apparel. I’ve got golf equipment reviews, book reviews, golf gadget reviews, and just random thoughts on what’s going on in the game. Along with my lifelong love of golf, I’ve always been passionate about health, fitness, and well-being. I include those topics on the site.

Naturally, I can’t buy every single item I review, and I’m not a big enough dog to get comped these items for testing- YET. What I do is a lot of research on the products I review and bring you the pros and cons as told from those that have used the item, so all you have to do is read my stuff to get the full picture.

My very favorite that has happened to me since I started the website is getting to talk to Tony Clark, the founder and CEO of golf swing plane trainer- PlaneSwing. I’ve been attracted to this product, or specifically, swing plane trainers since I took up golf when I was 23. I featured the PlaneSwing on my site and reached out to Tony via email, asking a few questions about himself, the company, and awesome product. Not only did he answer all my questions in detail, he gave me his number and offered to hop on a call with me. We actually spoke twice and I came away with even more confidence in him, his company.

You may be asking, “what the heck does this have to do with Phil Mickelson?” I can help here. Phil’s two most prominent coaches, and the ones he got all his majors with, are Randy Smith and Butch Harmon. Ok, whatever, you might say. What these two guys have in common is that they both use the PlaneSwing to train golfers at their academies. I can’t say for certain that Phil has used it, but I think it’s likely he’s at least tried it. He’s noted to be pretty curious.

Anyway, cool things happen when you follow your passions or interests and talk to other people who feel the same. I hope to be talking to many of you soon. Come on over to Golfer Geeks and say hi.
